New Delhi: A comprehensive five-year study conducted by AIIMS Delhi has found that practising yoga for just 30 minutes a day reduces the risk of a heart attack by 40% in adults aged 40 to 60.

The research tracked 10,000 volunteers across 12 cities and found that pranayama, meditation, and asana practice together lowered blood pressure, reduced LDL cholesterol, and improved arterial elasticity.

Lead researcher Dr Padmavathi said the benefits were most pronounced in participants who combined yoga with a plant-rich diet and maintained a consistent eight-hour sleep cycle.

The findings, published in the World Health Organization's flagship journal, have drawn international praise, with the British Heart Foundation calling the results 'clinically significant and replicable'.

The Indian government is considering including a structured yoga module in the national preventive-care programme, potentially reaching 50 million high-risk adults by 2028.
