Hyderabad: Scientists at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology have announced a breakthrough: a vaccine against Type-1 diabetes that demonstrated 87% efficacy in Phase-2 clinical trials.
The vaccine, developed over eight years, teaches the immune system to stop attacking pancreatic beta cells - the underlying mechanism of Type-1 diabetes - without suppressing broader immunity.

Trial lead Dr Shivaram said 800 children aged 4-12 participated in the multi-centre trial; the vaccine group showed an 87% reduction in the onset of full-blown Type-1 diabetes over a three-year follow-up.
Regulatory approval and commercial launch are targeted for 2028. The research team has committed to keeping the cost below ₹500 per dose, making it accessible to India's public health system.
The WHO has flagged the CSIR-IICT research for its global significance, noting that Type-1 diabetes currently affects over 500 million people worldwide with no preventive intervention available.
